Daddy, How Does a Sloth Give a Hug?
Children can come up with the craziest questions, especially when they don’t want to go to bed. Daddy, How Does A Sloth Give A Hug? by Diane Elgin is a beautiful children’s story about a little girl, Kayla, who wants just one more question before bedtime. Daddy lovingly and playfully answers how different animals give a hug.
This is a sweet, happy book, and the story, told in just 28 pages, made me smile. It reminded me of my daughter’s bedtime when she wanted me to read yet another story, changing my voice for each character. I can imagine reading this delightful book and acting out each animal on its pages. It would be a perfect nighttime favorite. I loved how the father became each animal making his little daughter giggle. I also liked that saying her prayers were a part of Kayla’s nightly routine. Children need a bedtime routine, and prayers are an excellent way to end the day.
This book contains full-page colorful illustrations done by Sophia Jin. Kayla has been drawn so expressively that you will fall in love with this character. You can see the affection the father and daughter have for each other. Young readers will laugh at Daddy’s facial features as he tries mimicking the different animals.
The story flows and is easy to follow. The vocabulary is easy enough for beginning readers, and younger children will enjoy hearing the pages read aloud to them and following along with the pictures. There is no slang used, and nothing is scary or frightening for kids.
I detected no grammatical or spelling errors and believe this book has been thoroughly and professionally edited. To me, this is the perfect children’s book. It is sweet and entertaining, and the pictures will delight most children. I could find nothing I disliked about it. I am awarding Daddy, How Does A Sloth Give A Hug? by Diane Elgin with 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to children of all ages. Grownups will like it too. I did and plan to read other books by this excellent author.
